The piano is a substantial object, and acquiring one for your home is a serious decision that will impact your life and shape neighborhood relationships. It’s a place where you store lavender sachets against moths. It’s the sonic object. It’s a bookshelf, a household pride, possibly the oldest and heaviest item you own, a music stand, a holder for notes, photographs, and flowers. It’s a piece of furniture, beautifully crafted from wood and metal. It represents time spent with it.
EVE AND ADAM – 12 Preludes for a Beginning is a collaborative work by young composer Adam Baranec and musician and educator Fero Király. Together, they’ve prepared a manual for adult piano beginners.
A few years ago, Adam, then a teenager and Fero’s student, wrote several simple compositions for Eva, who, in her 30s, was just beginning to play the piano. As a complete beginner with no prior experience with the instrument, no knowledge of musical notes but a substantial awareness of music,
she felt that learning to play pieces intended for children – the typical piano beginners – wasn’t quite suitable. Adam’s compositions came in handy; they addressed the lack of musical literature for an adult student who, beyond hand exercises, wants and needs to exercise the mind and ears, deepen her understanding of music, and gain new experiences. Fero organized these compositions, provided comments, and prepared methodological notes for them. Thus, a simple practical guide was created, helping those at the very beginning but also players who have mastered the basics and want to continue improving.
The Preludes are arranged by difficulty, and more than half of them include detailed instructions to assist with self-study. In addition to musical notes and instructional guidance, EVE AND ADAM also includes exercises and a detailed musical glossary.
