All You Can Eat

· AV essay

We are programmable bio-machines. We are cognitively independent beings. We are complex organisms driven by chance.
We believe in making our own decisions, even if sometimes we just rely on the throw of the cosmic dice – but never mind that! It’s part of the game.
We are the masters of our destinies! Or were our lives chosen for us by our parents, by society, or by our ancestors from the caves? We are educated, experienced, and possess significant knowledge. We have learned to distinguish the good from the bad, responsibility from irresponsibility, necessity from unnecessary things in life and quality from non-quality and in-e-quality.
We cross out all the right choices – and circle them, too.
It’s easy!
We understand the weight of our decisions–and aren’t afraid to use them.
And what did you choose for dinner tonight?
For your choice, press three.

Research shows that an adult human makes tens of thousands of decisions each day.

Within the same CPU, routine decision-making processes performed automatically run alongside higher cognitive functions requiring creativity, energy, and the evaluation of complex constructs.

These two types of systems are constantly negotiating the claim to our mental processing power.

The outcome of this negotiation shapes the space in which our decision-making takes place, influences its quality, and is crucial in programming our lives and designing our future.

The creed of Homo sapiens is the illusion that free will is our privilege. All You Can Eat explores the options we choose from, the conditions under which we make decisions, the autonomy we believe in, and the attention we give to our choices at a time when the decisions of any individual have the potential to shape global reality.

All You Can Eat is a AV performance about decision-making for two performers. It is the result of a process of choices, selections from known and unknown options, tchaining decisions, calculations, probabilities, and compromises.

Help yourself.
